Hazrat Sayyed Alauddin 'Ali Ahmed Sabir, RA:
More popularly known as Makhdum Pak [ 'the pure master' ], was born in 592
C.E. in Heraat, Afghanistan, in a family that claimed descent from the Prophet
Muhammed ( PBUH ). He is said to have been very pious as a child, so much so
that the first words he uttered were " la maujud ila allah", meaning 'Nothing
exists but God'. He received a traditional Islamic education, studying the
Qur'aan, the Traditions of the Prophet, Arabic and Farsi. Later, when he was
nine years old, his mother sent him to Ajodhan to her brother, the famous Sufi
Hazrat Baba Fariduddin Gunje Shakar, RA, for further education and spiritual
instruction. Makhdoom Sahib took initiation into the Chishti order at Baba
Farid's hands in 623 A.H.
As part of his spiritual training, Makhdoom Sahib was put in charge of Baba
Farid's langar or community-kitchen, where the faqirs and the poor were fed
free of cost everyday. Yet, Makhdum Sahib is said not to have eaten even a
single morsel at the langar, surviving simply on wild leaves and fruits. He would
also often fast, because of which was very frail and weak. Because of this, Baba
Farid bestowed upon him the title of 'Sabir' or 'the steadfast one'.
Like the other Chishti Sufis, Makhdoom Sahib carefully avoided association
with rulers, for they were considered corrupt and irreligious. Once, Shaikh
Ruknuddin, the grandson of the famous Suhrawardi Sufi Shaikh Bahauddin
Zakariya, happened to stop at Ajodhan on his way back to Multan after having
visited the Sultan in Delhi. He met with Makhdum Sahib and embraced him,
commenting that God had indeed bestowed him with great steadfastness. When
he left, Makhdum Sahib immediately had a bath and changed his clothes to
purify himself of the touch of one who was associated with the Sultan.
After spending several years in Baba Farid's company, training on the Sufi path,
Makhdum Sahib was instructed to settle at the village of Kaliyar, at the foot of
the Shivalik mountains, near Roorkee, in the present-day state of Uttar
Pradesh. He set up a simple Sufi lodge here and played an important role in the
spread of Islam in the region. His first disciple here is said to have been an old
woman, Gulzari, an oil-presser. He died in 690 A.H. and his dargah at Kaliyar is
today a major centre of pilgrimage for Muslims and Hindus alike.
The 'Twelve Pearls' [ bara moti ] of Makhdoom Pak
'Allah says:
Oh children of Adam! Do not worry about your livelihood as long as My
treasury is full, and My treasury is never empty.
Oh children of Adam! Do not love anyone other than Me and do not ask
anything of anyone [ other than Me ].
Oh children of Adam! I have made everything for you and have made you for
Me. So, do not debase yourself at the door-step of anyone else.
Oh children of Adam! Do not ask Me for your sustenance tomorrow. Trust in
Me and you shall get all.
Oh children of Adam! Just as I made the seven heavens and the seven worlds,
so too did I make you and will certainly provide you with sustenance.
Oh children of Adam! Just as I do not forget to provide you with your
sustenance, so, too, you should not forget to worship Me and should not go
against My commandments.
Oh children of Adam! Remain satisfied with what I have provided you, and do
not let your lower self overtake you.
Oh children of Adam! You are My friend, so remain My friend and do not
abandon love.
Oh children of Adam! Do not be unmindful of My anger until you cross the
bridge and [if God should will] enter heaven.
Oh children of Adam! Your lower self causes you to rebel against Me, but you
never get angry with your self for winning my acceptance.
Oh children of Adam! Do not fear an oppressive ruler as long as My Sultanate
lasts, and My Sultanate lasts for ever and shall never decline.
Oh children of Adam! If you remain satisfied with what I have given you, you
shall save yourself from the [eternal] torment'.
