Biography of Hazrat Imam Maalik RA

Maalik ibn Anas ibn Maalik ibn 'Amr al-Asbahi (
Arabic مالك بن أنس ) ( christian era; 715 - 796 AD ) --
( Islamic  era; 93 - 179 AH ), was one of the most
highly respected scholars of Islamic Juris Prudence
( Fiqah ), in Sunni Islam. Also known as "Imam
Maalik," "the Sheikh of Islam," "Proof of the
Community," and "Imam of the Abode of
Emigrati", author of al Mauwtta.

He  was born in Madina Munawwara in the year 715 AD. His
ancestral home was in Yemen. His grand father  moved and
setteled in Madina, after embracing Islam. He received his
education in Madina. Madina was the most important seat of
Islamic learnings.

Imam Maalik was highly attracted to the study of law, and devoted
his entire  life to the study of Islamic Juris prudence ( Fiquh ). It is
said that he sought out over 300  descendents of the Companions
of the Holey Prophet ( Sahaba ), from whom he acquired the
knowledge of  Holy Prophet's Hadis and Sunnah.

Imam Maalik studied Fiquh under the guidance of nearly one
hundred learned  Shaikhs, who were residing in Madina, at that
time.  Among Imam Maalik's writings is the great work the book
al-Mauwatta, which is the earliest suriving book of Islamic law and
the Hadis. It quotes the Hadis ( sayings o the prophet ) as well as
the practice accoring to the sunnah of the Holy Prophet, as was
observed by Muslims living in that era.

Although Imam Maalik wrote many treatises dealing with the
religion and ethics, the Book al Mauwatta is acknowledged as the
most impportant among his writings.  I is said that Imam Maalik
had originally recorded ten thousand  Ahadis in the book, but in
the revised editon the Imam reduced the number to only one
hudndred and senventy-two.

Imam Maalik was famous for his pioty and integrity.  He
courageoulsy stood up and was prepared to suffer for his
convictions.  An example is when the  governor of Madina forced
the people of the city, and demanded an Oath of Alliegiance to
Caliph ( Head of state ); Al Mansoor.  Imam Maalik issued a
"Fatwa" that such an oath was not a binding, because it was given
under  duress.  This resulted in many people finding courage to
express their opposition, but the Imam was arrested and was found
guilty of defiance and  was publicly flogged.

When the Caliph al Mansoor learnt of the outrage, he apologized
to the Imam and dismissed the governor of Madina. Sometime
later the Calif sent him 3,000 Dinars for his  travelling expenses
and invited him to come and reside in the city of Baghad; the 3rd
capital city of the Islamic world, after Damascus and Madina
Munawwara.  Imam Maalik declined the offer and indicated that
he preferred to continue his residence in Madina, where the Holy
Prophet was burried.

When the Caliph Haroon al Rashid came to Mecca for  Haj
pilgrimage, he also visited Madina. There he summoned Imam
Maalik to visit him and deliver a lecture.  The Imam politely
declined to go to the ruler, instead he invited the Caliph to attend
the class of students to whom he delivered regular lectures.  The
Caliph accompanied by his two sons accepted the invitation and
sat among the students to hear the Imam's Lecture.

He died in the year 795 AD, and is burried in the famous  al Baqie
cemetry in the city of the holy prophet.  Imam Maalik's followers
and disciples developed a  Fiquh School based on his books which
came to be known as the Maalikies. They are mostly found in the
North and the West of Africa, ( Tunis, Algeria, Morocco and
Egypt)
